Actualités

First Newborn Mediterranean Monk Seal Pup of 2026 Spotted in Aegean Cave The Hellenic Society for the Study and Protection of the Monk Seal (MOm) has recorded the first newborn Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) pup of 2026. The female pup was discovered alongside its mother inside an open coastal sea cave on a pebbled beach in the Aegean Sea.

Researchers confirmed the sighting during an inspection, noting that the breeding season has kicked off earlier than usual this year. Photographer and MOm researcher Panos Dendrinos captured the newborn sheltered deeper inside the cave, while its mother rested nearby near the water's edge. MOm expressed optimism for a strong breeding season ahead, emphasizing the importance of ongoing scientific monitoring and conservation efforts to protect one of the planet's most endangered marine mammals.
