Description
The project aims to integrate the successful model of the Gyaros marine conservation initiative into the Greek Marine Protected Area (MPA) system, aligning with the EU Biodiversity strategy for 2030. The strategy calls for 30% of European marine areas to be well-managed MPAs by 2030, with 10% designated as strictly protected No Take Zones (NTZs). Despite approximately 20% of Greek waters being designated as Natura 2000 sites, most lack effective conservation measures and management at sea. To address these shortcomings, WWF will leverage the success of the Gyaros marine protected area, established in 2019 in the Cyclades region, to enhance marine conservation efforts. Gyaros, an uninhabited island and its surrounding marine area, has thrived as an MPA with active guarding and preservation of exceptional natural values. Its participatory management approach has benefited local communities on neighboring islands. The project's objectives include documenting the positive impacts of the Gyaros MPA on nature, fisheries, and local communities. Additionally, it aims to develop a systematic approach based on lessons learned and best practices. This approach will be mainstreamed into the national MPA system through training for MPA management and governance stakeholders, advocacy for best practices, and partnerships with relevant authorities.
