Description

The National Marine Park of Alonissos Northern Sporades, the first marine area in Greece to be designated as a protected area in 1992. Its surface is 251 440 hectares, making it the largest park in the Mediterranean. It aims to protect, conserve, and manage the area's natural heritage and valuable resources, including the Mediterranean monk seal. Monitoring and guarding such a vast area requires systematic efforts. Surveillance vessels patrol the entire park daily, documenting environmental conditions and regulating activities within the area. Our support to this project (which is another phase of a 2021-2024 initiative) enables patrolling of the marine area but also monitoring of human activities and of species encountered within the protected area.
