Description

The project is taking place in the National Marine Park of Alonissos N. Sporades (which is considered one of the “friendliest” areas for the Monk Seal in the Mediterranean) and in the neighboring areas of Skopelos, Skiathos, Pelion and Evia, and Lichadonisia islets. MOm works on developing and operating an integrated, 24h/7, 365-day effective patrolling system within the marine park and aims to replicate the best practices implemented in the park to other areas through a public awareness campaign, the promotion of ecotourism (fishermen and boat operators).

Scientific monitoring of the local monk seal population in the area is also continued through this MSA-supported project.

Finally, MOm develops, in cooperation with the Greek authorities, science-based measures for the effective management of Mediterranean monk seals and their habitat within 5 Natura 2000 sites of the area.
