Newborn Monk Seal "Alexis" Rescued After Being Found Abandoned in Spetses A newborn Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus), named "Alexis", was rescued after wandering alone for three consecutive days along the western coast of Spetses Island. The young seal was observed moving from beach to beach among crowds, desperately searching for its mother.
Recognizing that the animal was lost and stranded, the Hellenic Society for the Study and Protection of the Monk Seal (MOm) monitored the situation before intervening with the help of local port authorities, a veterinarian, and volunteers. Alexis was safely transported to MOm's Rehabilitation Center. Initial medical evaluations revealed that while he is underweight and dehydrated, his overall health is stable, giving experts optimism for a full recovery and eventual release back into his natural habitat.
